Elafonisos
Pavlopetri and Punta beach from the air; the sunken town lies in the shallows

History and Pavlopetri

Elafonisos is a small island with a long history. Its name is linked to the deer, and according to tradition it was once joined to the Peloponnese mainland.

Pavlopetri

In the shallow water between the coast at Pounta and the island lie the ruins of Pavlopetri, a Bronze Age town that now lies under the sea. It is considered one of the oldest sunken towns known in the world and was inhabited about 5,000 years ago.

Researchers have recorded streets, houses and tombs, which show a planned town with a harbour.
