Church

St Patapios

The simple 1960 chapel at the island’s most remote tip, above St Patapios beach.

Discover

St Patapios is a small chapel at the most westerly, hard-to-reach point of the island, above the beach named after it.

Its story

The chapel was built in 1960 by a woman from the island, after a dream. Before that, a small shrine to the saint stood on the rocks at Avlaki, at the end of Panagia beach. Islanders believed an older church had once stood where the chapel is. Recently the people of Elafonisos repaired it, as it had been abandoned.

Getting there

By boat, or on foot from Avlaki on the path past Kakovracha and the snake cave: about three kilometres, rough in places.
