Pounta
The harbour on the mainland opposite, where you cross to the island, close to Pavlopetri and Lake Strongyli.
Pounta is the stretch of mainland opposite the island, and it also belongs to the Municipality of Elafonisos. The ferry to the island leaves from its harbour, Ypostego; the crossing takes less than ten minutes, over the sunken part of the old peninsula.
What you will find
There is parking next to the harbour and, to the east, the long silver beach of Pounta with dunes and junipers. A little further on are Pavlopetri, Lake Strongyli and the beaches of Hamokylo and Magganos.
A little history
Long ago, before the mole was built, the crossing was so shallow that people almost walked across between islets. At Siderospilia and Kamari there were iron mines in antiquity.
