Customs and festivals

  • August 15

The 15 August feast is one of the finest festivals on the island, at Panagia Katonisiotissa, above the beach of the same name at Kato Nisi.

It begins on the eve with the service at the church. Many pilgrims spend the night in the churchyard. That same evening young people gather on Panagia beach, light bonfires, dance and sing until morning.

Good to know

It is the busiest day of the summer. If you drive, set off early, or cycle there on the route from the village to Panagia.
