The Fisherman’s Festival
Fish, wine and dancing late into the night: the island’s celebration of the sea and its catch.
- Late August
In late August Elafonisos celebrates the sea with the Fisherman’s Festival, once called the Picarel Festival after a small local fish.
Its story
The custom began in the 1980s on the initiative of the fishermen’s cooperative. In the early years it took place in early October, when fishing with the beach seine opened. When the seine was banned and many fishermen had to sell or change their boats, the festival took its present name.
The festival
It is a celebration of the catch: plenty of fish and wine, and a party late into the night with island and mainland dances. A good way to meet the island’s people.
