Four days of celebration: the anniversary of union in 1850 and the Agios Spyridonas procession with music and dance.

Customs and festivals

  • 6 to 9 July

In early July Elafonisos celebrates twice over: the anniversary of its union with Greece, on 6 July 1850, and the consecration of the church of Agios Spyridonas, on 9 July.

The festival days

On the morning of 6 July the church bells ring out and the island is decked with flags: public buildings, shops and homes, until sunset on 9 July.

On 9 July, after the service, the icon of Agios Spyridonas is carried in procession around the church and on to the old harbour. The celebration peaks with music and dancing.

Good to know

It is one of the liveliest summer days in the village. If you are on the island, the procession at the harbour is worth seeing.
